Photography in Angkor -Location Guide

The best places for photography in Angkor Wat and Siem Reap

Angkor Wat is surrounded by temples offering unique settings. Below is a guide to some of my favorite places to shoot and go home with the best photos. I will assist you in planning the best time of day to avoid the crowds and make your experience as enjoyable as possible. This gallery does not include every location but the majority of my photoshoots take place in the locations below.

Angkor Wat

The most famous temple of all and the main attraction. Angkor Wat is great to shoot at but travelling to other temples takes a while so I recommend staying at Angkor wat for your shoot or booking a longer shoot to be able to get to other temples.

At peak times of the year Angkor Wat can also be very crowded, so you may wish to consider other options. I will give advice about this.

I recommend shooting here at first light, between 6 and 7am, just after sunrise.

Bayon

The stone faces of Bayon are some of the most recognizable images from Angkor. Here it’s easy to avoid the crowds as we can shoot outside the temple before it opens, and go in the minute it does.

It is easy to combine Bayon with another location, as they are easily accessible.

I recommend shooting here at first light, around 6.30 or 7am.

Ta Prohm

One of the “big 3”, this is a beautiful location for a 60 minute or longer shoot. It has a very ‘‘jungle feel”, and large trees covering the temple.

I recommend shooting here as soon as it opens at 6.30am to avoid crowds.

Prasat Preah Palilay

A very quiet and small temple, this is a great second location to shoot after Bayon. It is small so it makes a great place to get a few more pics after Bayon temple.

I recommend shooting here after a photoshoot at Bayon.

Beantey Kdei

A quiet and smaller temple, this is a beautiful location for a 30-60 minute shoot. It is away from the crowds and has beautiful hallways and natural beauty.

I recommend shooting here as soon as it opens at 7.30am

Ta nei Temple

Picturesque remnants of a 12th century temple honoring Buddha, tucked away in a jungle environment.

I recommend shooting here as soon as it opens at 6.30am for the best light

Local Pagodas - a unique experience

Join me for a relaxed photo walk through some of Siem Reap’s local pagodas and modern temples — peaceful places where monks live, study, and welcome visitors. These smaller temples in Wat bo or An Kau Sai capture the true spirit of Cambodia, offering quiet moments and beautiful photo opportunities without leaving town. You never know what we might discover, but every visit brings something special, just a little closer to home than the temples of Angkor.

These places are less crowded than the Angkor temples so we can go in the early morning of late afternoon, for the nice light.

Exploring Siem Reap through the lens offers endless inspiration - from sunrise at Angkor Wat to hidden pagodas in Wat Bo or Wat Damnak. Each location tells its own story of light, texture, and timeless culture. If you’re planning a photoshoot or simply want to capture Cambodia at its best, feel free to explore my Siem Reap photography packages . Whether you’re a solo traveler, couple, or family, I’ll help you create authentic images that celebrate the beauty of Angkor and beyond.
